This romantic comedy is a modern classic because it portrays two of the typical people of our generation trying to find love in the age of social media. The characters are masterfully developed throughout the entire film and you will find out that there is much more about them than meets the eye. Sleeping with Other People is one of the best movies on Hulu to watch on a lonely Thursday evening because it will make you realize that you are not the only one dealing with hundreds of social issues every single day.

  • The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival on January 24th 2015 and got rave reviews.

9. Whiskey Tango Foxtrot (2016)

Whiskey Tango Foxtrot walks us through a journalist’s (Kim Barker) experience while covering the war from Afghanistan for three months. Without any proper training except for a few hostile zone exercises a few years prior, Kim quickly realizes she is not emotionally prepared for this environment. The cruelty and dangers of war quickly put a strain on her, and so does the fact that she is seen as a sexual distraction by most men around her.

Even though IMDb categorized this movie as a comedy/war movie and stars comedian &actor Tina Fey, the movie will only get a few chuckles out of you, at most. In fact, critics consider it a journalistic war drama – in fact, one of the best war movies on Hulu.

  • The movie was dedicated to Tina Fey’s father, Donald H. Fey.
  • The advice “opening your mouth when getting mortared” is implemented on battlefields to reduce the internal damage caused by increased pressure, which can lead to ruptured eardrums or internal organs.

IMDb Rating – 6.6

8. Super (2010)

This comedy/drama is starring Rainn Wilson as Crimson Bolt – a superhero who, although guided by the best intentions and aiming for justice, seriously lacks the heroic & physical skills which are a must for the job. What initially motivated him to take on the role of a crime-fighting superhero was his wife leaving him for a drug-dealer, and he stands by this hate while trying to break down the drug dealer’s gang. However, his only weapon is a pipe wrench AND he has a flawed sense of boundaries, which only adds more to the trouble he gets himself into.

The movie is just the right mix of comedy, drama, tragedy, parody, and thriller – a recipe that definitely isn’t for everyone. However, it’s one of the most challenging movies on Hulu that leaves viewers torn between laughing and shedding at least a few tears for the tragic life of what genuinely is a good human being.

  • Rainn Wilson was cast as Crimson Bolt while Jenna Fischer, then-wife of writer and director James Gunn, was filming for The Office. After reading the script on set, Fischer mentioned Wilson, who played Dwight Schrute in the series, would be perfect for the lead role. She showed him the script, he loved it, and decided to take the job on the spot.

IMDb Rating – 6.8

Director – James Gunn
Writer – James Gunn
Cast – Rainn Wilson, Ellen Page, Liv Tyler

7. Cloverfield (2008)

The whole Cloverfield movie is filmed with a handheld camera; its sub-plot is being shown as small, episodic pieces of video that are being overwritten with another recording. The first few frames show a monster that destroys a building in the heart of New York City, while subsequent bits of video footage record their efforts to investigate and document the tragedy while also trying to save one of the main character’s friends.

Many viewers compared the movie to Blair Witch Project mainly because of the way it was recorded; however, almost all of them agreed this technique is implemented better and more naturally in Cloverfield. So if you were a fan of BWP, this is one of the best movies on Hulu for you!

  • None of the actors were given or allowed to read the scripts before signing their contracts. In fact, Lizzy Caplan didn’t even know she was auditioning for a monster movie until her second audition – she thought she was auditioning for a romantic movie.
  • The first cinematic trailer for this movie shocked and confused many cinema-goers as it played right before the 2007’s Transformers movie. It only showed a huge explosion in the NY city center and the head of the Statue of Liberty falling to the ground.

IMDb Rating – 7

Director – Matt Reeves
Writer – Drew Goddard
Cast – Mike Vogel, Jessica Lucas, Lizzy Caplan

6. Eight Men Out (1988)

If you love sports and baseball movies, Eight Men Out is just the right production for you. it recounts the famous Black Sox scandal in which the Chicago White Sox took bribes to lose the World Series 1919, mostly because of how underpaid they were. It features realistic baseball scenes and backdrops, but beware: if you watch this movie with friends or family which have no interest in or knowledge of baseball, they might not enjoy it as much as you.

Viewers who enjoyed this movie often mention it’s highly unappreciated, as it does a great job at portraying the whole Black Sox scandal and how it affected the history of baseball and sports overall.

  • As the contract Sayles (director) signed forced him to keep the movie under 2 hours long, he organized a viewing of the 1940 movie City for Conquest, which was supposed to inspire them and show them how to talk fast – and it worked! The final edit of the movie was 1:59:48.
  • Even though the movie displays a ballpark with full stands, only 1,000 extras were needed for the production. The director used cardboard cutouts for spectators further in the back and a contest for one lunch with Charlie Sheen for the extras.

IMDb Rating – 7.3

Director – John Sayles

She also notices they keep as much information from her as they can.

The rest of the movie shows Kate struggling with her conflicting and changing emotions and thoughts towards the whole mission, especially while the whole situation and the reasons behind her recruitment unravel.

  • The word sicario is derived from latin, where it means dagger man and described Jewish zealots who used a small dagger, or sica, to kill Roman soldiers and citizens. This, in turn, derives from the verb secare which means to slice.
  • Emily Blunt, who portrays Kate Macer in this movie, based most of her performance on a female FBI agent she interviewed before the production began. She spoke to a total of 4 female FBI agents and mentioned she noticed a certain shyness and loner quality in all of them.

3. Blue Is the Warmest Color / La Vie d’Adèle – Chapitres 1 et 2 (2013)

Blue Is the Warmest Color is a modern classic that you simply cannot miss because it is one of the best stories about falling in love. The film tells the story of Adele, a young French teenager, whose life is simply taken by storm by Emma, a mysterious girl with blue hair who is unlike anybody she had ever met before.

This non-conventional love story unravels gradually as Adele falls in love head over feet with this immensely complex woman who will change her life forever. This is a true coming-of-age story because it takes us through all of the experiences that shape Adele into an adult.

This bittersweet love story is impressively realistic and it grips you from the very beginning. Blue Is the Warmest Color is one of the best movies on Hulu because it approaches the atypical love between two women in a very relatable way and it manages to assess some of the deepest issues that lesbians struggle with in this modern society.

  • Léa Seydoux and Adele Exarchopoulos actually became very good friends while shooting the movie. They said that to a certain extent, they shared the relationship that their characters had in the film.

2. Mary and Max (2009)

Mary and Max is one of the best animations ever made and also one of the most complex dramas of the last few decades. It is a modern classic because the outstanding stop-motion animation technique used by Adam Elliot brings to life an amazing world.

This masterful animation is aimed for parents, rather than children because it explores some of the most complex issues of the modern society. In fact, it is one of the best movies on Hulu because of it brilliantly assesses some of the deepest aspects of coping with depression and social anxiety.

Toni Collette and Phillip Seymour Hoffman are the voices of Mary and Max and their performances are nothing short of extraordinary. Mary and Max is a heartfelt story about friendship told in an entirely unique way.

  • Writer director Adam Elliot said that he based the character of Max on a pen friend that he had in New York and with whom has corresponded with for over twenty years.

1. Silence of the Lambs (1991)

One of the most chilling movies of all time, Silence of the Lambs recounts the efforts of Clarice, an FBI trainee to pick the brain of psychiatrist and serial killer Hannibal Lecter for one of her assignments. During her interviews with Lecter, who have been in a maximum security isolation cell for over 8 years, she figures out her superiors need this information to try and solve another serial murder case.

But in order to get the information she needs, Clarice needs to expose herself emotionally to Lecter and play along in his psychological game. Truly one of the best psychological thrillers ever made, and the best movie available on Hulu at the moment, in our opinion.

  • Anthony Hopkins, who plays Hannibal Lecter, studied the files of serial killers in reparation for this part. He also visited prisons, talked to or studied prisoners convicted of murder, and even attended court hearings regarding them.
  • Jodie Foster who portrays Clarice revealed Lecter’s mocking of her southern accent during their first meeting was completely improvised – her horrified reaction was as natural and honest as they can be!
